Whether you maintain your dog’s coat at home or are a professional pet groomer, you have invested your money into high-quality grooming tools. For safe use, your tools need to be kept as hygienic as possible and therefore, keeping them clean is a priority.

Keep stock of soft cloths in your dog grooming kit and set aside a few moments after every grooming appointment to care and clean your tool. Additionally, use Wahl Antibacterial Surface Spray and Wahl Antibacterial Hand Gel to maintain optimal sanitation.

Keep reading to learn how you can make the most of your grooming tools.

Cleaning Brushes, Combs, Scissors and Nail Clippers

Ensuring your grooming tools are free of dirt is essential in ensuring best hygiene. Whether you are a pet owner or groomer, you are more than likely to own a Slicker BrushPin Brush or a Bristle Brush (if not, then browse Wahls!).

To clean your brushes and combs simply follow the steps below:

  1. Start by removing any hair that is caught in the brush or comb.
  2. Fill a sink or small bowl with hot water and add a small amount of antibacterial soap.
  3. Leave to soak for 10-20 mins.
  4. Once soaked, remove them from the water and use a soft cloth to dry them.

Nail Clipper are available in two main types: Plier-style and Guillotine-style. Which type you use is down to personal preference but the cleaning process it the same for both.

The same cleaning process can also be followed for your pet scissors.

Cleaning Dog Clippers

If you are a professional dog groomer, clippers are an essential item kept in grooming kit. Your clipper needs to be strong, reliable, and importantly, kept free of hair and other bacteria. Cleaning clippers is slightly more intricate than cleaning brushes, combs, scissors and nail clippers. You will need to set aside some extra time to carry out this task.

It is advised to clean your clipper blades at least once a week, dependent on how often you use them. If you find that you are frequently cutting dense or dirty coated dogs, you may need to clean your blades more often.

To clean your clippers follow the steps below:

  1. Ensure the device is unplugged / turned off.
  2. Remove any hair or debris using a cleaning brush.
  3. Use Wahl Hygienic Clipper Spray and a damp cloth to clean all parts OR,
  4. Fully immerse and soak the blade (if you have snap on blades).
  5. Allow all parts to air dry.
  6. Reassemble your clipper / trimmer correctly.

To lubricate your clipper blades:

  1. Apply a small amount of Wahl Clipper oil directly between the teeth on the rear rail and on the blade guide.
  2. Allow to soak in for a few minutes.
  3. Wipe away any access with a lint-free cloth.
  4. Re-apply after every cleaning and as need during clipping.
Wahl Super Groom Clipper Kit

When using clippers regularly or for a long period of time it is recommended to renew your blades.

To keep your best blades in top condition, it is also advised to use a Wahl Blade Ice Spray on the blade. Simply spray through the blades occasionally and you will notice reduced friction and blade wear without leaving a heavy residue of oil.  The spray will cool, lubricate, clean and disinfect clipper blades while they are being used.

Additionally, you can use Wahl Hygienic Clipper Spray to disinfectant and keep your blades clean and free from bacteria, virus and fungi.

You should also store your blades with care in a blade case or box. This not only protects and keeps your blades safe from being dropped and damaged but also keep them tidy and organised!
