The double coat is divided into two separate layers, a soft fine topcoat and a coarse layer of long hairs underneath. The short hairs are typically woolly, and the longer hairs appear to be thick and fluffy. The denser the coat, the fluffier the coat will look. The undercoat protects the dogs from hot and cold temperatures, and the topcoat repels water.
COAT GROOMING TIP
Daily brushing will help with coat shedding. With a wide variety of dog breeds with this coat type, some will require frequent clipping and others will benefit from regular trimming and tidying. This type of coat requires clippers that are powerful and have sharp blades in order to cut through the dense soft undercoat and course outer coat.
